Keep the year and denominator attached to the number
The construction count is 41 for 2025, compared with 35 in 2024 and 46 in 2023. The 2025 construction rate is 3.0 fatalities per 100,000 workers. A count and a rate answer different questions; neither should be presented without its year and industry scope.
The national total of 222 spans all industries. Likewise, national categories such as falls from height and falling objects must not be relabelled as construction-only totals. Read the table heading and notes before using a number in a briefing.

Understand what the dataset excludes
Traumatic fatality data does not measure all occupational harm. Disease-related deaths, natural causes and suicide are outside this measure. Serious injury claims use a different reference period, with 2024–25 data provisional in the release.
This means an apparent contrast between two tables may reflect different definitions or periods. Do not add fatalities and claims together, compare unmatched years as though they were one trend, or use a low count to conclude that a task is harmless.

Turn the release into questions about the next job
Review the activities actually planned: access, deliveries, work at height, moving plant, interfaces and changing conditions. Ask whether the existing project risk controls match that work and who has responsibility for confirming them. A national chart does not replace a job-specific assessment.
The useful output is a list of decisions and owners. For example, a change in delivery access may require the project team to revisit arrangements before materials arrive. Record the change and obtain the appropriate review rather than treating the original plan as automatically adequate.
Price the controlled method, not an optimistic shortcut
When preparing an estimate, identify the access, equipment, sequencing and coordination assumed in the method. If the customer changes those assumptions, revisit the programme and price through the agreed process. Do not hide unresolved safety decisions behind a general contingency.
An illustrative quote separates a known work package from an access arrangement that still needs confirmation. It names the missing information and a review point. This is commercial organisation; the competent project team and applicable jurisdiction determine the actual safety requirements.
Communicate the data accurately to your team
A short briefing should state the source, year, industry and meaning of the figures, then focus on the decisions relevant to current work. Do not use a stock photograph as evidence of an incident or imply that a pictured worker was involved in one.
The article’s photograph is illustrative. Vocalys can help capture site observations and turn agreed work items into a quote. It does not certify a working method or replace the employer’s and project participants’ responsibilities.

Australia: national statistics, local project responsibilities
The release covers Australia. Applicable duties and project controls must still be checked for the state or territory and actual work.
41 construction fatalities is an industry count; 222 is the all-industry total. They are not interchangeable.
No new legal threshold, exposure limit or universal site procedure is inferred from these statistics. · Safe Work Australia — new WHS data, 12 October 2026 · Safe Work Australia — Key WHS Statistics Australia, latest release

FAQ
Do the statistics create a new regulation?
No. This is a statistical release.
Are 222 deaths construction deaths?
No. That total covers all industries.
Can I compare claims and fatalities as one dataset?
No. Their definitions and reporting periods differ.
What should change in an estimate?
Make the intended method, access assumptions and unresolved decisions visible; use the appropriate project risk process.
